Simple & Sweet 2 Year Old Birthday Ideas: No Party Edition
If you’re looking for alternative ways to celebrate a two year old’s birthday without a party, here is a list of 30 ideas for every budget!
I grew up in a family that threw a party every year for every birthday, so I thought that a birthday party was pretty much a requirement! However, when I had my own kids, I realized that throwing even a small party can be stressful and expensive. After hosting a first birthday party for each of my three kids, I decided that we would probably do a big party on some years, but opt for celebrating their birthdays in a smaller and more cost-effective way most years.
Last year, we skipped the 2nd birthday party for our third child, and I believe it was the best time we ever had celebrating a birthday!
Read the 30 ideas you can celebrate a child’s birthday without a party below!
Reasons for Skipping the Traditional Birthday Party
Every parent wants to make sure their child has a good time on their birthday, even if they don’t understand it or won’t remember it. But sometimes, you don’t want to throw a traditional party.
Some reasons for skipping a traditional birthday party include:
- Having a tight budget — Hosting a party can be expensive. Even a budget-friendly birthday party is more than some parents can afford.
- Busy calendar — Sometimes, a wedding comes up or your birthday falls on a holiday, and there is just no way to fit it into the calendar.
- Health reasons — Perhaps you recently had surgery or a new baby.
- Personal preferences — Some little kids don’t enjoy being around a lot of people and are more comfortable with a small group. Or maybe you prefer to not throw birthday parties and keep birthdays a more intimate celebration. Instead of being busy socializing with party guests, you just want to focus on quality time with your toddler.
- They won’t remember it — Lastly, a toddler likely won’t remember their second birthday!
No matter what your reason is, there is no shame in skipping the big party for a year. There are dozens of ways to celebrate your child’s second birthday and make the birthday kid feel loved and special without throwing a party.
The ideas below are perfect for toddlers and young children, but they can give you ideas for older kids, too! Also, don’t feel like you have to check every single thing off the list or fill the day to the brim with festivities. Just pick a few ways to make your 2-year-old’s birthday a special day!
Now, let’s get to the ideas!
Start the Day
Here are creative ways to start the day for the birthday girl or boy!
Decorate Their Bedroom Door
A unique way to start a birthday is to decorate the bedroom door to surprise your child when they wake up! Hang streamers and a birthday sign on their door. This could be a fun birthday tradition to start!
Decorate the House
Just because you’re not having a birthday party, doesn’t mean you can’t decorate! A simple birthday banner and balloons signals to your child that this day is special and it’s for them.
Scavenger Hunt
As soon as the your little prince or princess wakes up, present them with a scavenger hunt! Give them fun and simple clues to find their birthday present or some treats.
Birthday Ideas for the Day
Next, here are 2-year-old birthday ideas you can do during the day instead of a party:
Themed Day
Instead of picking a party theme, pick a theme for the whole day! Make snacks and meals and choose activities that relate to a theme.
Birthday Theme Day Ideas:
- Hawaiian
- Camping
- Cowboy or cowgirl
- Disney
- Color (e.g., make everything red or your child’s favorite color)
Balloon Bounce Game
Play a game with a balloon! Try to keep a balloon from hitting the ground (It’s called Keepy Uppy if your toddler watches Bluey!).
Favorite Meal
One easy way to celebrate your two year old’s birthday is to make your child’s favorite foods for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Another idea is to let them cook or bake with you. My kiddos LOVE getting in their kitchen helper tower to help me stir something.
Sensory Bin Activity
A fun activity you can do at home is create a cool sensory activity. Use a water table or some big plastic bins, and look up sensory bin activities on Pinterest!
Arts & Crafts
Sometimes, doing crafts with a toddler seems kind of pointless. It just ends up being a big mess! But they really enjoy getting to play with markers, glue, and other craft supplies they don’t normally get to touch! You can find a fun art project on Pinterest or Youtube to do on your toddler’s birthday.
Splash Pad
If your child’s birthday is in the summer, a splash pad is a great idea for this age group.
There are a couple free community splash pads in my area, and I love taking my toddler there because it’s a safe place for small kids to play with water.
Indoor Playground
Play areas are a great option! Whether it’s a play center or just a restaurant that has an indoor play area, your toddler will probably be delighted to go someplace different to play.
Outdoor Playground
Keep it budget-friendly and visit a park. Bring lunch and a blanket to make it a picnic, or eat at a picnic shelter!
Build-a-Bear
Your two year old might really enjoy Build-a-Bear. Kids get to enjoy the experience of picking a stuffed animal they like, putting the stuffing inside, and picking out an outfit! Build-a-Bear currently offers a Pay Your Age bear — the bear costs the age your child is turning (If your child is turning 2, the bear would cost $2!).
Build a Fort
Get all the blankets and pillows you can find and build a huge fort in the living room! Read stories and play pretend in the fort.
Nature Walk
If you’ve ever tried going on a walk with a two year old, you know they love to stop every couple of steps to pick up things off the ground and observe their surroundings. Two year olds are little naturalists, and they might enjoy a short walk on a nature path if it’s a nice day. Go their pace and let them explore!
Zoo
Take a trip to the zoo or even a small petting zoo! Two year olds won’t know the difference — they will be so excited to see some of the animals they hear about in nursery rhymes all the time!
Aquarium
An aquarium is a fun way to spend a birthday! A two year old would be absolutely mesmerized by giant tanks of water and fish. Just don’t forget to bring a stroller for long walking activities like this — they still get tired and need them at this age!
Fun Zone
Trampoline parks, amusement park, arcade, or other energetic fun zone is a great way for your toddler to burn some energy! If your toddler has older siblings, this can be a great family activity. Look up the place ahead of time to make sure they have a toddler-friendly area!
Children’s Museum
A children’s museum is another activity that can be enjoyed by young children as well as older children. Children’s museums usually have something of interest for every age group. You could make a day trip out of it!
Bubble Machine
A bubble machine is a HUGE hit for young kids. They are not too expensive and can provide a ton of fun for your child!
Dance Party
Play your child’s favorite song and get up and dance together! My two year old was obsessed with Baby Shark for a while, and she would have loved to have a family dance party to that song.
Visit the Library
The library is another free activity. My local library has a wonderful children’s section with a pretend play area and sensory activities that the kids love. You can also pick up some new books to borrow!
Bike Ride
If you have a bike trailer or bike carrier for your toddler, they might enjoy a little stroll in it on their birthday!
Get Together with a Small Group
If you don’t want to host a big party, but still want to include a few important people, you can organize a small gathering with close friends and/or family members. Maybe invite them to join in on one activity of the day.
Birthday Cake or Other Dessert
Of course you gotta sing happy birthday to the birthday kid! Stick with the traditional birthday cake or choose a different special dessert, like ice cream or cupcakes. Add a couple candles (you may still need to help your child blow them out)!
Open Presents
Pick a time to give the birthday kid their presents! They may have not been good at opening presents last year, but this year, they know how to rip wrapping and get excited about new toys!
Call or FaceTime Family Members
FaceTiming grandparents or someone special to your toddler is a great opportunity to give your child a special moment with people they love on their birthday.
Free Play
Don’t schedule the whole day for the birthday boy or girl. Leave some time for free play (and maybe a good nap!). Two year olds get tired and cranky pretty fast!
End the Day
Finally, here are a few ideas on how to end the day for the birthday kiddo:
Movie Party in the Living Room
Let your two year old pick a movie and have a movie night in the living room! Make a sweet treat and lay down some pillows and blankets on the floor to make it comfy and fun (or use a fort you built earlier)!
Bubble Bath
Make bath time a little extra special by adding some bubbles! You don’t need special bubble soap, just squeeze a little shampoo into the running water as you fill the tub to get bubbles.
Story Time
End the day cuddling and reading some favorite books before bed time. Quality time is the best thing to a two year old, and extra story time together will fill their love tank.
Final Thoughts on No Party 2 Year Old Birthday
As you can see, you can skip the guest list and party favors and still make your child’s birthday a special occasion! You can easily celebrate your two year old’s birthday for $100 or less and skip the cost and stress of a big party.
These birthday ideas would work perfectly for a two year old, three year old, four year old, or even five year old!
